Why Do Chicks Need Flint Grit?
Unlike mammals, chickens do not chew their food with teeth. Food is instead ground down inside the muscular gizzard.
Small pieces of hard, insoluble grit help the gizzard perform this grinding action. Providing appropriately sized chick grit is particularly useful when young birds are eating foods other than finely prepared chick feed, such as grains, greens or other treats.
