Suitable For
Pillow Wad Barley Straw is suitable for rabbits and other appropriate small animals, including mice, rats and degus.
Some animal-welfare guidance recommends avoiding coarse straw for guinea pigs because the stalks can occasionally cause eye injuries. A softer, low-dust bedding material may therefore be more suitable for guinea pigs.
How to Use
Create a comfortable layer of straw inside your pet’s sleeping or nesting area. Check the bedding every day and replace any damp or soiled material regularly to help keep the enclosure clean, dry and comfortable.
Pillow Wad Barley Straw may also be used alongside a suitable absorbent base layer where appropriate.
Feeding Information
Although suitable small animals can safely nibble barley straw, it is primarily intended as bedding and enrichment rather than a substitute for feeding hay.
Rabbits and other hay-eating small animals should always have unrestricted access to suitable feeding hay. Pillow Wad advises that hay should make up approximately 80–90% of a rabbit’s daily diet because it provides more essential fibre and nutrition than straw.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place. Do not use straw that has become damp, mouldy, clumpy or developed an unusual smell.
